Newsletter - May 2010Our exhibition is up and running at the Park Hotel, Bremen. An ideal venue and the setting is brilliant. The sculptures look as if they were made to be there. Hotel and staff were of great help and their assistance to erect the exhibition was appreciated. We would not hesitate in recommending the Park Hotel for a stopover should you be traveling in the area. The local newspapers were very interest in the exhibition and they gave us exceptional editorial. This makes all the hard work worthwhile. The exhibition closes on 11 July, the same day as the finals of the “World Cup” in South Africa and it then moves on to the Hotel Nassauer Hof, Wiesbaden. Park Hotel
I have started looking for suitable venues at which to hold an additional exhibition next year. The typical venue would have an outside space for 12 to 16 large sculptures and inside space for at least 20 to 25 small and medium sculptures. The length of the exhibition to be at least 2 months. Last but not least the venue must be easily accessible to the public. Most of our sales come from the people seeing the sculptures, stopping and enquiring about what is happening and then taking an interest. Therefore good exposure is a pre-requisite. I would love to do an exhibition in Hamburg. Our new sculptures have arrived from Zimbabwe. These sculptures were purchased in middle of March and were finally delivered by the 20 May. The costs to bring the sculptures down from Zimbabwe is very high. This is mainly due to the fact that there is no regular trade going on between Zimbabwe and the rest of the world. Trucks therefore run backwards and forwards nearly empty and the little goods moved must pick up all the costs. Example Harare to Johannesburg – distance 1200km, price R7 000-00. Johannesburg to Cape Town – 1600km, price R3 400-00. Customs entry in Zimbabwe US$ 350 (R2 600-00) per document. In South Africa R120-00. All of this makes it very expensive to do business with Zimbabwe. Many of the artists have stopped carving. The reason, to trying and obtain stone from the Great Dyke is very expensive. The cost of transport internally is ridiculous. Another reason is that their sales are few and far between, no tourists. The older established artists rely on galleries that have supported them for many years. It is a very sad and difficult time for all and a great loss of talent. New Sculptures
All of our new sculptures are on the website. Two sculptures of particular interest are the football-playing frogs by Bizeck Majengwa. I thought these unique, and what a find for the year of the World Cup. Please remember there are only two. First come, first served. A sculpture that is very unique and very different, a tremendous amount of carving went into it, is the Moon Spirit by Oscar Suede. It is the first sculpture of this subject matter that I've seen from an artist. The sculpture is brilliantly carved and very well-finished. Please visit our website www.artcreationsafrica.com to view the rest of our new sculptures. For people who are interested in the first generation artists: I have included two sculptures by Henry Munyaradzi, one sculpture by Nicholas Mukomberanwa and one sculpture by Bernard Matemera in the Park Hotel exhibition. The Henry “of Tengenenge” Munyaradzi sculpture were carved back in the early 1970’s and are valuable collector items. The Nicholas is an excellent sculpture, well carved and finished, typical, of his style and very collectable. It is a sculpture worth having a look at. The Bernard Matemera is a very good Matemera head, bringing in his metamorphic ideas. In this case a “Rhino head”. All the sculptors have passed away and their sculpture is no longer readily available. I buy where possible from collectors whose prices are reasonable. For anybody who is interested I suggest have a look at these three sculptors on Google where there are many pages of information. Please do not get put off by the price in United Sates of America. These are up to 300% higher than that which we advertise. First Generation Sculptures
