Newsletter - January 2009Wishing all our loyal customers a “Prosperous and Happy New Year for 2009”. The end of 2008 was reasonably quiet and 2009 has started up the same way. May be this is due to the exceptionally cold weather in Europe and everybody has gone to Ski? Jannette has left to join her new husband in Kuruman. As you are all aware there is a consignment of sculpture waiting to come from Zimbabwe. This has been ready for transportation since November 08. We were not able to obtain Zim Custom Clearance. There was always something not quiet right and we had to pay a little more. Last week Zim Custom required an additional USD 1500-00 to print the release. They have been paid and we hope the necessary paperwork will come forth. Once it is released it will take 2 more weeks to reach Cape Town. The total time to get the shipment down will have take one week short of 5months. The situation in Zim is becoming worse and worse. I will not be traveling to Zimbabwe until it improves. We cannot afford to leave money lying around and not know when we will receive our sculpture. Zimbabwe must be the only country in the world were the purchaser must pay the bank 15% up front to change money into local currency to be able to pay the supplier, however, this is down from 35% of 6 months ago there is no liquid cash (bank notes). The banks will then issuing a document C D 1to prove forex has entered the country. You then start with customs about 10% to 12% is required for the release of the sculpture by customs for export. What a system. Very bad news Amos Supini was murdered in December. He died of poisoning. The story goes he was in business with a Zim friend in Australia. The friend came to Zim on business, there was a dispute and it is said he poisoned Amos. However, nothing has been proven to date. This is a major blow to this young art movement. Amos was very highly thought of as an up and coming innovative sculptor. For the past 5 years has been teaching the art of carving stone using only a hammer and chisel at various tertiary institutes in Florida, USA. His sculpture was unique and had a very distinctive style. Should you be interested in obtaining one of his sculptures please contact me. Have just had a very interesting telephone call from a person living in Iceland. They are moving all their processions to South Africa and amongst processions will be 30 sculptures left over from an exhibition held in 1980’s. I have been asked to please restore the sculptures and find buyers. Anybody interested in obtaining an old sculpture please contact me. Back to Newsletters >> |
