Newsletter - August 2009

Dear Friends and Customers,

A short note and update as to what is happening in our sculpture world.

Firstly, we have a new user friendly website. The old website is no longer. Many of the suggested ideas from our readers have been included. We ask all of you to please have a look and let us know what you think, or how you believe we can improve our site in the future.

Our annual exhibitions starts on 31 August 2009 and runs until 31 October 2009 at the Hotel Nassauer Hof, Wiesbaden, Germany, Tel nr 049 611 1330. Mr. Godfrey Matembuka will be in attendance to answer all your queries. There will be 36 sculptures on display at all times. However, we have sent a total of 83 sculptures. Should you wish to view any of the other sculptures, Godfrey has pictures and he can fetch the sculpture from the store.

Once again we are looking for new venues at which we can hold exhibitions in 2010. During this visit to Germany I will be visiting Berlin and Bremen to look at possible sites for future exhibitions.

Business as usual is very slow at this time of the year. Summer is coming and we hope everything will pick up. We are being flooded with artists telephoning, e-mailing and arriving with sculptures for sale. They are very desperate to try and earn a little money. There are no tourists going to Zimbabwe and there is no alternative work. Unemployment is running at over 60% (I believe it is closer to 80%) and those that have work are employed on short time. Prices of commodities are crazy. Zimbabwe went from a very stable mid 90’s currency Zim Dollar 1.00 equal SA Rand 1.00, to trillions of Zim Dollar equaling SA Rand 1.00. The country then changed to US Dollar and SA Rand as their official currency. People are confused and many can’t understand this new system and therefore prices in many cases do not make any sense. People do not know if the price is US Dollar or SA Rand and there is an 8:1 ratio. It is all quite confusing. We all hope the system will sort itself out in the very near future.

We were thankful to have sold sculpture from the estate of the late Amos Supuni. The customers that bought sculptures assisted his family. I found out that when he died he was married for a second time and had a total of eight children to support. So thank you very much for your support. Should there be anybody still interested in his sculptures please let me know and I will arrange to have photographs sent to you. Remember he was considered to be one of the best second generation sculptors.

Regarding the Bernard Matamera sculptures, one has been sold to Switzerland. The very collectable Rhino man and woman are still available.

Moving on to other news. Tarryn Skea has left and is now in Denmark. She received a 2-year course on multi media, fully paid with monthly allowance, from the Danish government. She could not turn down such an opportunity. We have been lucky to find Ina Labuschagne to step into her shoes. We wish Ina lots of luck in her new career. Janetta Bekker, who was with us for many years, is still in Kuruman. However, there is a chance she and her husband may be returning to Gordon’s Bay.

The only bad news is that we lost three of our very valuable friends. Ms Celia Winter Irving passed away in July. She will be missed because of all the work she did on writing catalogs, newspaper articles and artist biographies. Colleen Madamombe passed on in June. She has left a very large gap amongst our female artists. Her large rotund ladies with smiling faces she will be sorely missed. Pedzisai Mupinga passed on in June. This was a shock as he was with me just before his death. He will be missed, as he had quiet a gathering of collectors who loved his well-finished sculptures.

Once again we appeal to our friends and customers to let us have pictures of the sculptures bought through Art Creations Africa showing them in their new homes. It is very interesting to find out what has happened to our sculptures.

Until next time.

Kindest regards
All at Art Creations Africa
