Art Creations Africa´s primary objectives are to expose, offer, educate and inform art collectors and prospective art lovers on the history and background of the now famous and world acclaimed hand carved hard stone sculptures from Zimbabwe. We maximise the sales and marketing of these beautiful sculpture to the tourist industry, international art markets and art collectors through local and international exhibitions, and through our website. At the same time we use our large stone art gallery, sculpture garden and storage facility in Somerset West, Western Cape, South Africa as a base from which we are able to display, pack and distribute the stone sculpture bought from the artists working in Zimbabwe. The artists hail from Angola, Zambia, Malawi, Mozambique and Zimbabwe. Our website gives prospective buyers not only the background and history of this exciting art movement, it also includes hundreds of artists biographies, write ups on the various types of stone used for carving, pictures of over 400 sculpture with their dimensions and weight as well as news of what is happening in the world of stone sculpture. Our objective and realisation being the more we can sell the better life is for all our artists and their families in Zimbabwe.
All the sculpture purchased from the artist is through negotiations, after which it is then packed and sent to our gallery where it is checked for cracks, imperfections are repolished, photographed and advertised on our website at prices that all can afford. Through our inexpensive method of marketing we are able to keep prices of sculpture affordable. Our primary objective is to sell as many sculptures as possible enabling the artists to have a regular income. Art Creation Africa does not discriminate between the sculptors or the different sculptor generations. We support artists from the old masters of the first generation to the young emerging artists of today. We have a large investment in stone sculpture and therefore only the highest quality sculptures are bought. Art Creations Africa has sculpture for sale dating back to the early 1960´s and is always looking to buy old sculpture for resale. It is always of interest to see how sculptors have progressed in their chosen path. Once the new sculptures arrive at the gallery their bases are levelled so that they are able to stand properly and a hole is drilled into the base so that they can be securely mounted on a pin. When the sculpture is sold it is carefully packed in a box/crate that is made in house for that sculpture(s). Great care and pride is taken in our packing to ensure that the sculpture(s) arrives safely at there new home. All who have bought a new stone sculpture are proud to be the owner of a very beautiful, unique possession. A hard stone sculpture is very unique because there is only ONE hard stone like the hard stone from which the sculpture was carved. This is why hard stone sculpture differs from all other sculpture forms e.g. Bronzes, a bronze is normally marked as 1/25 this being the first casting of twenty-five, so there will be 24 other similar castings. This cannot happen with a hard stone sculpture - there is only one such stone from which the sculpture was carved because there is only one stone with the unique markings as seen on the sculpture. Soapstone is different in that many similar items can be carved that look identical and are similar in colour and texture. With this in mind, what is hard stone? Firstly, how do we measure hardness? This is done on a Mho scale where a diamond is measured at 10.0. Soap stone measures at about 0.75 about as hard as a hard cheese and can be easily carved using a knife. Serpentine measures about 3.2 and Springstone up to 5.4. To successfully carve these hardest of stones the artists must use chisels fitted with tungsten carbide tips and use corundum studded files afterwards to smooth the surface before polishing begins.
