Groot Constantia

Groot Constantia, one of South Africa's heritage sites and the finest surviving example of Cape Dutch architecture. Groot Constantia is one of South Africa´s foremost historical monuments and tourist attractions, dating back to 1685.

The estate was bought in 1716 by Captain Oloff Bergh, who bequeathed it to his wife Anna De Koningh. Groot Constantia had many owners until it was sold by Jan Serrurier to the Cloete family in 1778. From this time until 1885, when it became the property of the Cape government, Groot Constantia remained in the hands of the Cloete family for five generations. It was the Cloete family who did the most to beautify the estate and it was during their tenure that Constantia wines, whose unique quality had already acquired an international reputation, were much sought after by the royal courts of Europe, the rich and the famous and were much celebrated in literature.

Art Creation Africa was elated when it was given the honour to hold a small stone sculpture exhibition in one of the tasting rooms. We are proud to be able to say we've had stone sculpture at one of our fabled heritage sites.
