Vickson Kaphombe

Vickson Kaphombe, born in Tafara on 24th September 1973. He attended the school of Tafara Junior up until Grade 7. He did not attend senior school.

Vickson began sculpting at the age of 14 years at Tapfuma Gutsa´s Utonga Workshop in Tafara high-density suburb, 10 kms east of Harare. It was here that he met Dominic Benhura, the two have been working together ever since. Vickson accompanied Dominic at Chapungu Sculpture Park for a period of two years as a resident artist.

He has worked alongside the leaders of the Second Generation and has absorbed a great deal. Technically he is extremely proficient tackling the hardest stones. Amongst his friends he is known as the ´´machine´´ for his aggressive and hardworking approach to sculpting.

Only 25 years of age, Vickson is producing sculpture that belies his age. Concentrating mainly on figurative work in his own distinctive ´´block´´ style, he incorporates texture and balance giving rise to sculpture that pleases even the most trained eye.
