Taurai Maisiri

Taurai Maisiri, born on 27th December 1959. He belongs to a tribe in the Makoni district of Zimbabwe. Both his parents are still alive and he is married but has no family as yet. He attended St. Thomas school and left after attaining Standard VI in 1975.

Taurai then went home to his Kraal, but eventually went to Bulawayo to work, and got a temporary job as a carpenter. In 1979, he went to live in Harare with Lameck Zano, who is a well-known carver. It was Lameck who encouraged him to take up sculpting, carving Buffalo, Rhino and Elephant in Soapstone. In 1981, Taurai started to carve in Verdite, which he found very exciting and in fact still does. He says that it is a challenge and enjoys the ultimate beauty of a well-carved piece. He specialises in carving Buffalo.

His ambition is to continue carving in Verdite, making a name for himself as a famous carver and perhaps one day purchasing a small holding to retire on. Meanwhile, his burning ambition is to travel abroad, taking some of his lovely carvings with him and thereby making his name known overseas.
