Samual Masakwa

Samual Masakwa, born in 1971 on the 15th September and the first born of nine siblings, educated in Zengeza No Five Primary Shcool and later Zengeza Four High School.

Out of keen interest he started to sculpt at a tender age of fourteen. His cousins are accomplished sculptors. They are Nicholas Mukomberanwa and Albert Mamvurha whose brotherly love nurtured the interest in him to greater heights. During the school holidays Albert shaped Samuel´s pending career as an artist by engaging him as his assistant in 1991. After completing his O-Levels he started sculpting full time at Albert´s workshop. As an apprentice sculptor he learnt how to carve Shona abstracts, figures and heads.

Whilst he was working with Nicholas he had a chance of learning how to remove hidden angles on hard stone like Springstone, Cobalt, Serpentine and the Green Opal from Chiweshe. In 1996 his cousins advised him to become independent in order to explore new avenues and ideas he was bringing into sculpturing. Samuel discovered that he did not have his own distinctive trademark so he approached another accomplished artist, Joe Mutasa for assistance.

With the achievement of his own distinctive trademark and the guidance of Joe, he would not be where he is today. Joe´s tall and thin sculptures are unmatched in the field of sculpture.

Since obtaining his own workshop, many apprentices have since started lessons on how to carve by his method to produce the same kind of art at the workshop. Amongst the apprentices was his wife Nyarai Masakwa, who was interested in his growth and achievements in the field of art. Nyarai started carving lady figures and expressing women´s activities in society. As a couple their art grew in leaps and bounds and they have successful exhibitions locally and in private galleries abroad, mainly in the Netherlands and America. They have since exhibited in combined exhibitions in Germany, Belgium, Switzerland, UK, Spain and France.
