James Tandi

James Tandi, born 16 March in the Kraal of Chief Zinyama in the Bindura District of Zimbabwe. He is married with two sons.

James attended Mpandira School and left after Std. VI in 1970. He then stayed at home with his parents, trying his hand at carving; his encouragement coming from his brother Nicholas Tandi, who was already a well known carver. His brother showed him the finer points of carving in Soapstone, and this James did for 7 months. He then left home to work for a well-known Pottery firm from 1973-1976, making pottery. He then left and went back to carving in Soapstone, selling his works to any shop or curio shop, which would buy it from him.

In 1979, he started to carve in Verdite, which he found a very big change from Soapstone, but he eventually overcame the adjustment, and now enjoys carving in this media.

James has been to the U.K. in 1983, participating in the ´´Art in Action´´ held at the Waterperry, near Oxford, and some of his carvings are on display at Harrods of London. He specialises in Heads and Figures and abstracts.

James owns his own home, and his ambitions are to become an International carver, to travel all over Europe and the U.S.A, visiting all the famous galleries and to get to know all the world famous sculptors.
