Everisto Kakweza
Everisto Kakweza, born in 1948 in Tapfuma Kraal in the Mudzi District of Zimbabwe, he is of the Shona tribe and his Totem is the Monkey.
Both his parents are still alive, living on their smallholding and cultivating their land. He is married with two wives and is the father of seven children.
Everisto attended Msau Primary School and left after completing standard VI. He then returned to his home and started painting, as he had a natural ability to paint, being good at art whilst at school.
In 1973, whilst passing the Canon Patterson Art Centre in Harare, he decided to call in and have a look around the art centre. He begged Canon Patterson personally to give him a chance to show what he was able to do, and it appears that this opportunity paid off, he was accepted at the Art Centre, and he began to carve in Soapstone and Serpentine.
In 1978, he branched out as a carver, and began carving in South African Verdite, and in 1979, reverted to Zimbabwe Verdite. He specialises in carving Heads. He has never been out of Zimbabwe, but would like to travel abroad, should the opportunity arise.
His ambition is to purchase a farm and cultivate produce to sell on the market. In this way he would then earn a living, which he terms as more relaxing than carving, which he finds very exciting, he would then carve only as a hobby. He would discourage his sons from trying to earn a living as carvers, but would encourage them to cultivate carving as a hobby, should they show any signs of inheriting their fatherīs talents.
