Caleb Shamhere

Caleb Shamhere, born 11 July 1955 in Vumba, from the tribe Mumanyika. He is married with four children. Caleb comes from a very large family; he has two sisters and six brothers and is the only member of his family who carves. Calebīs parents live at Mutasa communal lands farming.

Caleb left school in 1971 after completing his junior school education. He started working on a farm, and then for a construction company. In 1975, a friend Israel Chikumbirike introduced him to carving and influenced him.

He first started carving in wood, and then later used various serpentines and verdite. Calebīs ambition is to continue carving and make a name for himself internationally and he also wishes to go back to Mutasa communal lands and teach others how to carve.

When he is not carving, Caleb enjoys reading and going to church. Caleb produces male and female heads and abstract figures. His work can be seen in local galleries and at The Gallery Shona Sculpture, in Chapungu Village.
