Alfred Gutsa

Alfred Gutsa was born on the 13th of August 1975 in the Mutoko district. He attended primary school and secondary education at Murewa Mission and finished advanced level at Nyatsime College from 1995 - 1998 where he studied Accounting and Business Law.

Alfred started sculpting in 1992 when he visited his brother Tapfuma in Shurugwi. He had a memory of animals and human figures he used to mould when he was young and herding cattle in the veld. An inner urge forced him to start working on some small stones. Also of important value to his work is the environment he lives in which tends to put a feeling in his sculpture. He has developed outstanding technical ability, which, combined with his very innovative ideas and imagination, result in sculpture which is distinctive and often full of humor.

He owes many thanks to Tapfuma Gutsa, Dominic Benhura, Mutupo Gallery and his brother Daniel, with whom he is staying with, for their unequivocal support and for encouraging him to take up art.
