Stanford Derere Stanford Derere was born on the 31st of January 1956 in Chapeya Ma Village in the Makosa district and is of the Tembo Mazvimbakupa tribe. He is a second generation sculptor and the eldest of eight boys.
Stanford left school after completing two years of senior school. While still of a young age, Stanford started modelling figures of humans and animals in clay. In 1985 he joined the B.A.T. Workshop at the National Gallery to study art. He specialised in painting and print making on wood. His ambition is to help younger people to understand the art form, especially children from the rural lands. In 1985 he exhibited in London at the Africa Centre. Since then he has entered in all the local exhibitions. Stanford works at the Dominic Benhura carving studios where he carves mainly very elegant birds.
