Joseph Munemo

Joseph Munemo, born in June 1953 in Harare, Joseph grew up in the Mrewa district of Zimbabwe. He comes from a family of six children. Joseph left school in 1969. In 1970 he joined the Driefontein Mission and started sculpting in wood, after three years he came back to Harare and worked for the Tengenenge Gallery. In 1976 Joseph went back to Mrewa and started working at St. Paulīs Mission where he was instructing the youths in sculpting and crafts. Unfortunately in late 1977 the project was abandoned during the war. Since 1978, Joseph sculpts at home and sells to various galleries in Harare.

He was greatly influenced as a young boy by his grandfather who made the Ceremonial drums in the village.

In his spare time Joseph does a lot of charity work with physically and mentally handicapped adults and children, using his sculpting and craft ability to help others less fortunate. Joseph has three children and is now married to Agnes Nyanhongo - one of the few lady sculptors in Zimbabwe. They together have one child.

He has participated in many group international exhibitions.
