Joe Mutasa

Joe MutasaJoe Mutasa was born on the 16th of December 1964 in Rusape District of Zimbabwe. He is of the Muumgwe tribe whose Chief was Makoni. Joe´s totem is the Nyati Shonga (Buffalo).

Joe came from a large family, five boys and three girls. He completed his junior school education in Makoni, where he excelled in arts and crafts and went on to complete his high school education in Harare, where through hard work he passed his A- and O-Level examinations.

In 1983 he left school and took up a course in Public Relations for which he received a diploma. He was greatly influenced by his brother Gregory Mutasa, under whom he had worked for many years. Joe first started working on very small pieces of Verdite, and over a period worked his way up to doing large exquisitely carved heads.

His great love of art stems back from family history. His great grandfather was a master craftsman in his village, making jewellery out of gold beads he had crafted.

As well as working in fine art, Joe designs furniture and continues to draw. He is a great lover of realistic art.

He is married with one child and lives in Harare, Zimbabwe.

His work has been exhibited in the U.S.A., Germany, Kenya, South Africa and Australia.
