Gideon Nyanhongo Gideon Nyanhongo, born on 22 December 1967 at Elim Mission, Nyanga, educated at Mazarura School and Avila Mission, Gedion is the son of one of Zimbabwe´s most prominent first generation sculptors, Claud Nyanhongo. He is also the brother of Zimbabwe´s first woman sculptor, Agnes Nyanhongo, a prominent sculptor in her own right. His grandfather was a craftsman too.
As a child, Gedion helped his father in chiselling, sand papering and polishing his pieces. When he left school, he went to work in sculpture gallery as a salesman. During this period, Gedion0180s artistic appreciation developed a great deal and in 1988 he started to sculpt his own pieces. His love of sculpting soon superseded the security of a job as a salesman and his vocation as a motorcar mechanic. In 1989, Gedion left work to sculpt full time under the guidance of the late Joseph Ndandarika. He began by assisting Joseph to finish his pieces and then started to produce his own works. Gedion likes to work on the green Nyanga stone, a very hard stone from his home area. However, the availability of suitable tools in the country does not always allow him to work on this stone.
