Aaron Chikumbirike

Aaron Chikumbirike born 29 August 1951, at Wedza and belongs to the Mbire Tribe whose Totem is the Giant Age. He is the eldest of three sisters and nine brothers. Aaron´s father still farms on his farm in Tribal lands unfortunately his mother passed away many years ago. Aaron is married with three children. His ambition is to raise his children well, give them a good education and help them lead a good life. All his brothers carve; they mainly do representational work in Ruby Verdite.

Aaron left school in 1968 after obtaining a Junior Certificate of Education and started to carve in wood. While still at school woodcarving was his hobby and Aaron was persuaded by local missionaries to try and sell his work. After leaving school he started carving full time. In 1970 he started experimenting with various types of stone, and in 1976 he started using Ruby Verdite - a hard, semi-precious stone only found in Zimbabwe. The changeover took some time to get used to.

Aaron´s work is well finished and he produces very elegant pieces of sculpture. Aaron sculpture has been purchased by many overseas visitors and has been exhibited with many group exhibitions. In 1980 a successful family exhibition was held at John Mann House in Harare, Zimbabwe.
