Thomas Mukarobgwa

Deceased Thomas Mukarobgwa a Zimbabwean painter and sculptor, was born in Nyanga.

Thomas first contact with the art came in 1956 when he met Frank McEwen, director of the National Gallery of Zimbabwe. Frank employed him as a gallery attendant and gave him artistic materials and invited him to join an art class, which was then being formed in the basement of the museum. Thomas thus became one of the original members of what was to become known as the Workshop School.

Thomas began his artistic career as a painter and turned towards sculpting in 1962. He returned to painting in the early 1990īs. Thomas kept working as a gallery attendant until his retirement in 1997. Thomas planned to devote his remaining years to painting at his country house, but he passed away in Harare before getting the chance.
