Damian Manhuwa

Damian was born in 1952 in the Rusape District of Zimbabwe and was introduced at an early age to wood carving by his father Fabian Manhuwa.

However, it was upon seeing work by Joram Mariga that he was first inspired to carve. In 1970 he joined The National Galleries Workshop School under the direction of Frank McEwen, where he stayed for two years. Damian worked for many years at Chapungu Sculpture Park. He also had his own studio in Chitungwiza.

Damian passed away in January 2007.

Damian was selected to spend 4 months as a resident artist at Sitka Centre for Art and Ecology, Oregon, US of America. During his resident programme he conducted seminars and demonstrated how hard stone was carved. His sculpture was included in exhibitions held in San Francisco, Loveland, Atlanta, Chicago, Cleveland and New York.
