Crispen June

Crispen was born in 1958, in Harare. Crispen left school at an early age and helped his sculptor father at Tengenenge, where they lived for many years. Crispen worked for a period at the Tengenenge gallery in Harare, in 1978 Crispen started to carve commercially - working in a representational way with stones such as verdite. He joined Sylvester Mubayi as an assistant and in 1985 became as a serious, full-time artist.

Crispen had grown up in a family of artists and received strong influence from his father and brother. Through his work, he tries to view the work around him as his ancestors might have done - one with spiritual relevance. The creative process he demands of himself involves taking into account his responsibility as the inheritor of traditions initiated from his father. This link with his elder relatives and mentors is one he views extremely serious and had a profound influence on his sculpture. His sculpture has been included in exhibitions in Germany, Holland and England.

““Sculpture keeps me going, it is a process of creating, like God created. I must create things, my own things. When people see my work, especially when it is exhibited overseas, the sculpture represents me. It must be spiritually strong, to communicate to others in a different culture. I want more people to view this work that I have created.““

Crispen June passed away early 1999.
