Tafadzwa Mandala Born in 1984 (Harare), Tafadzwa Mandala left school after completing four years of high school at Cranborne Boys High in 2001. Since then Tafadzwa has spent seven years sculpting Shona sculptures and during that time has produced mainly craft work but has recently specialized in artistic creations of beautifully finished Black Serpentine, Fruit Serpentine and Springstone (working in all sizes). His subject is almost always of human expressions, some of his favorites include Water Spirit, Protecting Spirit, Lovers, Protecting Mother and Leaf Heads.
When asked about his life Tafadzwa had this to say: “In our family we are four, two boys and two girls. When I am not working, I enjoy reading inspirational books about the arts and our heritage, my favorite being “World of Michel Angelo, arts and soul”, “The ancient world” and “Zimbabwe shona sculpture”. My father, Peter Mandala, a renowned first generation sculpture artist in Zimbabwe, taught me everything I know and it is to his memory that I strive to become one of the most popular artists in the world!" Tafadzwa’s work can be found in various local galleries and sculpture gardens but takes more pride in that he exports to the USA (Spirit in Stone), Holland, Germany, France, Austria, Australia and the United Kingdom (namely Yorkshire Sculpture Park in West Betten). His signature faces are characterized with U/T shaped eyes and straight lines. Tafadzwa’s last words to all, “I have been and will always communicate with other people through my art work. My father showed me that creativity runs through my blood, for this you will always be in my heart.” Artist's Sculpture (Click to view):
